WHAT HAPPENS IN A LESSON?

Each one of us is different. Each one of us has his or her own personal history, individual living circumstances and associated habits. This is why Alexander Technique is most effectively taught on a one-on-one basis.
A typical lesson includes a mixture of discussion and practical work. The teacher may ask you to carry out a simple movement such as walking across the room or sitting down in a chair and standing up again. In this way the teacher can observe how you use your whole body and, through a combination of verbal instruction and gentle hands-on guidance, help you release unnecessary muscle tension. The resulting improvement in posture and core stability is often experienced as a feeling of lightness and relaxation which brings about a general a sense of calm and wellbeing.
Part of the lesson may also include you lying down under the teacher's guidance in the classic Alexander Technique semi-supine position which allows the whole body to release tension, widen, lengthen and expand.
Over the course of time, lessons may incorporate applying the technique to everyday movements and activities such as lifting, bending, running, working at a computer etc. as well as special interests or complex skills such as singing, dancing, playing a musical instrument, yoga or riding, to name but a few. continue
